In what ways do your products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This is a familiar question from AS, but it counts for more (as there are fewer questions at A2 and you have 3 products to evaluate).
Break down the question:
products = all 3. The music video may take longer, but don't miss out the other 2.
form = a form of media product. A music video is a form. It is in the same medium (moving image / video) as other forms (TV documentary, short film, TV drama) but these forms are different. Similarly a digipak is a form of printed product, so it has similarities (e.g. using images, text, graphics) as well as distinct features of the digipak form (e.g. track listings, copyright details).
conventions = what other products of this form, and genre, typically do
use = do something similar
develop = introduce something new, but mainly produce something similar
challenge = produce something very different, something that tries to disrupt the conventional
You are assessed on the level of your understanding of the 3 forms and their conventions. Therefore, make your answer detailed. Very detailed. Every shot in your video contains multiple signs that you could discuss. Text on a website is not just text: it’s colour, font, size, position, verbal content… Text on a digipak has been manipulated for all of those, and leading, kerning, percentage height and width, effects, angle of rotation...
My three products are based on the alternative rock genre. To keep within the conventions of my chosen genre I compared my products with professional products from artists such as All Time Low, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, You Me At Six, Twenty One Pilots, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco.
